Photography (Technical Stuff and Printing)

Photothru.com. This website's design is clumsy, colors are atrocious and album management features are worse than bad, but you can upload as many pictures as you want, create online galleries and view other people's images. Photothru.com is a great Internet resource. Upload times can be slow. They also offer photo printing services at 0.29 US cents for a single small print plus postage (I am sure prices may change). They used to have an incredible promotional offer for its potential US customers of 20 free prints just for signing up (you'd still have to pay postage though).

Pravda.ru (English edition) - Despite its name, this is not the same paper as the old Pravda, the mouthpiece of the Soviet Communist party. A few people who run this online Pravda were associated with the old Communist publication, but unlike its hard copy predecessor the virtual progeny is not ideological, albeit the flavor of its news coverage and editiorial pieces tends to be somewhat etatist.

Rosbalt - Rosbalt News Agency, Russian and Baltic Sea region business news.

The Spectator

Haaretz - main English language source of news and commentary from Israel

Jerusalem Post A publication that seems to be closer to the Israeli religious right than Haaretz. Free online subscription is an inconvenience.

Ethnofascist regimes in Europe are not just the ghosts of the past. At least two openly racist, rabid ethno-fascist regimes exist in the former Soviet Union. These are the so-called republics of Latvia and Estonia. Post-Soviet Russian politicians, a remarkably corrupt and submissive species, did not to prevent the emergence of the racist states on the eastern coast of the Baltic, did not “interfere” while the institutions of ethnic repression and apartheid were being erected, and still keep silent about ongoing fascist malfeasance. In the last few years NATO has become an expansionist tool of occasionally russophobia-driven American foreign policy in Europe. Inclusion of undemocratic, in this case ethno fascist states, for strategic reasons is nothing new (open scale tyrannies like former Greek dictatorship used to “enjoy” NATO membership), but the planned admission of Estonia and Latvia to NATO has only purpose Ð in case of fantastic “emergency” to advance future attack positions for US forces against Russia. Quite naturally the "expansion" has nothing to do with either stabiliy, peace or democracy. Planned EU membership of Estonia and Latvia was a primarily German undertaking, the Reconquista. Germany attempted to annex Baltic States in World War I and World War II. Germany ultimately failed but after collapse of the Soviet Union a fresh opportunity presented itself to “alter” the historic outcome of the World War, and thatÕs precisely how Estonian and Latvian ethno fascists see it.

"people of Russian origin were severely discriminated against in Latvia and Estonia, and this was an unacceptable situation " United Nations Commission on Human Rights, Press Release, March 24, 2003.

Estonia - a brief article by Michael Metsner, which pretty much explains the nature of the present day ethnofascist regime..Ê

My favorite airlines and civil aviation links:

Air France - the best airline in the world.

SN Brussels Airlines, much smaller heir to the old Sabena, which used to be my favorite airline.

Lufthansa - plain but good.

Aeroflot - yes I positively love flying with the new Aeroflot. They are friendly and they speak Russian. Aroflot is probably the best on Russia's domestic routes.

KLM - flying with KLM is a special experience as long as you don't get trapped in aboard a flight operated by the Northwest Airlines on KLM codeshared transatlantic routes. Northwest is not too bad, but KLM is still much better.

Finnair - like most things Finnish Finnair is excellent. Finnair is very expensive on internal European routes but has an extremely competitive pricing policy for its intercontinental destinations.

Pulkovo Airlines - the airline of St. Petersburg. Food is excellent, beer is from the city's best breweries, and the staff speak Russian.

Commercial aircraft
